10 x 1 Hour Sessions

This course is designed for participants with a brief understanding and knowledge about falconry and what they would like to acheive from being a practising falconer. For complete beginners, the 5 day intensive is really more suitable as it will discuss in depth, more of the general aspects of falconry. Including species suitability, law and legislation, understanding and having the opportunity to work with a variety of different species, a full hunting day with hawks and falcons, etc.

Initial session to incorporate future plan of participant and what they want to acheive from the course. This is a one-one course and therefore can be tailored according to the individuals needs and requirements. We can also cover points of the 'Beginners Falconry' award, so the participant can include this if required. This session will also cover the 'falconers knot'.

• Recap on knot and move onto basic handling skills. Including, 'picking up' and 'putting down', bating, tethering equipment and hooding.
• Weight management and necessity of understanding factors affecting flying weights, fat weights, etc. Food stuffs and preperation. Nutritional values of foods used.
• Accommodation: Aviaries, mews, floor coverings, perches, positioning of such housing. Safe construction, health and hygiene within the housing, disinfectants, etc.
• Equipment: Making and fitting furniture to hawk.: Anklets, jesses, tail bell, bewit, etc. Cover other equipment used e.g. perches, lures, gloves, bags, etc.
• Basic training steps: Handling new arrival, initial manning, when to start training, etc.
• Flying on creance, first steps of training to when to fly free. Telemetry.
• Using different grounds: how to adapt to new surroundings, training on lures, fitness training.
• Flying session with one of the working birds, so as to discuss flushing, dipatching prey, different signs and signals from the hawk in regard to the situation.
• Recap on points made through the course. Cover any parts participant is unclear on. The opportunity to fly one of our birds unassisted for confidence.

This is just a general guide to what can be covered within the 10 weeks. Obviously dependant on participant knowledge, the weeks can be tailored to fit the requirements.
