2nd Tarvin Brownies win Peckforton Castle 'name the owl' competition

02 November 2010
The 2nd Tarvin Brownies are the proud winners of Peckforton Castle's competition to find names for two new birds of prey – a Brown Wood Owl and a Great Grey Owl – launched in September via the region's media and the hotel's popular Facebook page.

After sifting through more than 100 entries, judges settled on a suggestion from the 2nd Tarvin Brownies who proposed the names of Baden and Powell, the founder of the Scout movement, in celebration of 100 years of girl guiding and because all brownie Guiders are named after owls!

Peckforton Castle managing director Chris Naylor explains: "We thought the 2nd Tarvin Brownies suggestion was perfect as we wanted names that would suit male and female birds and something with a bit of a story behind it. The birds – a boy and a girl – are a bit older and a lot bigger now and really suit their names."

To celebrate the win, 25 2nd Tarvin Brownies will visit Peckforton Castle later this month to enjoy a tasty lunch courtesy of the 2010 Brasserie and a falconry session with head falconer Mark Birdsall, when they will meet the owls they named and learn about the hotel's conservation work with its 30 birds of prey, which include owls, hawks, falcons, and eagles.

The hotel's birds of prey are extremely popular with all visitors and make regular appearances at weddings, corporate events and private parties. The encounter experiences, which last an hour and a half each, allow visitors to get up close and personal with the birds of prey and actually fly them for themselves.

Peckforton Castle joins local celebrities to support KiDs of Bolton charity

12 October 2010
Peckforton Castle is joining a string of local celebrity footballers and comedians on 20 October to support a charity golf event at the Old Links Golf Course in Bolton in aid of the KiDs of Bolton charity.

Peckforton Castle is sponsoring one of the holes and on the day will have some of its birds of prey and a court jester to entertain, plus a special 'pick me up' for the golfers.

Created by Bolton Wanderers footballer Kevin Davies, the new KiDs of Bolton charity aims to help disadvantaged under 16s from the Bolton area. The golf day, which will include Vernon Kay and Peter Kay and will be televised by Sky Sports and Soccer AM, is just one of many events Kevin has planned to raise funds for the charity.

Kevin comments: "I receive many letters asking for help as a professional footballer and I have decided to establish the KiDs of Bolton charity to provide for young people needing help under the age of 16 in the Bolton area.

"I will be working with Bolton Wanderers Football Club and the local media to help identify KiDs who may need help. I will also be looking to set myself certain challenges throughout the year and looking for sponsorship. We already have a number of local companies showing interest in getting involved by offering services, donations and various prizes for upcoming fundraising events."

Peckforton Castle managing director Chris Naylor adds: "We are delighted to be able to support Kevin's new charity. It is a very worthy cause which will help a lot of under privileged children."

Peckforton Castle reports record sales

14 September 2010
Award winning Cheshire hotel Peckforton Castle is reporting its best month ever for August 2010 following the successful launch of its new £1.7 million facilities.

Sales at this unique 48 bedroom venue were up 7.12 per cent in August compared with the same month last year, making it the most successful month since the Naylor family acquired Peckforton Castle in 2006.

Sales across all departments are up, with the highest growth noted for conference bookings, which rose by a massive 275 per cent from August 2009. Food and beverage sales are up 83.65 per cent from August 2009, as a result of the launch of the 2010 Brasserie in July this year and leisure activity sales rose 102 per cent from August 2009. Sales in the 2010 Brasserie rose almost 45 per cent from July to August this year.

Peckforton Castle managing director Chris Naylor comments: "In our business we expect August to be a great month, but these figures are beyond our expectations and forecasts. The growth in the conference market is testament to our success in widening the appeal of Peckforton Castle. We have fantastic facilities for the conference market and corporate clients are now appreciating that. The growth in food and beverage is a clear indication that the launch of our new 2010 Brasserie has been a huge success with both residents and non-residents."

The new £1.7 million facilities opened in July and include 10 luxury en-suite bedrooms, the 2010 Brasserie and beauty treatment facility Tranquility. The 2010 Brasserie and Tranquility, in addition to the award winning 1851 Restaurant, welcome non-residents.

Peckforton Castle launches 'name the owl' competition

27 August 2010
Peckforton Castle is launching a competition to find a name for two of its new birds of prey, a Brown Wood Owl Great Grey Owl. The owls, aged just three months, join this Cheshire landmark's collection of more than 30 birds of prey, which include owls, hawks, falcons, and eagles.

The Great Grey Owl will be trained by Peckforton Castle's falconers Mark Birdsall and Danny Willan will form an integral part of Castle life, delighting visitors with their beauty and talent and teaching visitors about the importance of the conservation work carried out by Peckforton Castle.

The Brown Wood Owl is a medium to large owl, with no ear tufts and dark eyes. It has a light chestnut-brown upper-parts barred with dark brown and some white. The crown is dark brown, the facial disk is whitish or light rufous with dark rings around the eyes. It has a brown chest becoming paler towards belly with fine dark barring. The Brown Wood Owl is a resident breeder in south Asia from India and Sri Lanka east to western Indonesia and south China.

The Great Grey Owl is one of the largest owls in the world and can live for up to about 40 years in captivity. It is dark grey overall with flecks of light grey and white. When perched, the Great Grey Owl appears looks bulky because of its dense, fluffy plumage, long wings that extend past the body, a relatively long tail, and a large head. The size of the head and the prominent facial disk make the yellow eyes appear small. A noticeable white moustache strip is under the facial disk, broken by a black bow-tie. The feet are heavily feathered and remain hidden from view.

Peckforton Castle managing director Chris Naylor comments: "When the birds are young it's very difficult to identify whether they're male or female, so we're looking for names that would suit either sex."

The hotel's birds of prey are extremely popular with all visitors and make regular appearances at weddings, corporate events and private parties. The encounter experiences, which last an hour and a half each, allow visitors to get up close and personal with the birds of prey and actually fly them for themselves.

The competition ends on 30 September. Entries should be sent to sales and marketing director Jessica Johnson at jjohnson@peckfortoncastle.co.uk or by post to Jessica Johnson, Peckforton Castle, Stone House Lane, Peckforton, Tarporley, CW6 9TN.

The winner will receive a lunch for two people in the new 2010 Brasserie excluding drinks, plus a falconry session. The prize must be redeemed before 31 December 2010.

The competition is also running via Peckforton Castle's Facebook page.

Peckforton Castle talks history and conservation to children

17 August 2010
Last month, more than 60 children from a Cheshire school enjoyed a trip to Peckforton Castle as part of a competition prize won by two pupils from Tarporley CofE Primary School.

Peckforton Castle launched the competition to children across Cheshire in March and invited them to design a new children's menu for the venue's 1851 Restaurant and brand new 2010 Brasserie, with a focus on using local, seasonal produce.

As part of their visit, the children learnt about the rich history of the country's only intact medieval style castle and the work undertaken by the hotel owners to restore the building to its former glory and to preserve the surrounding natural habitat.

The highlights included seeing the winning children's menu in action and a falconry session where the children met the hotel's collection of exotic birds of prey and had the opportunity to get close up and personal with owls, falcons and eagles.

Euan Roberts and Lucy Rimmer both won prizes for their outstanding contributions to the competition. Two of Euan's menu choices appear on the new Knights and Maidens children's menu along with Lucy's striking design, which can be coloured in.

Peckforton Castle managing director Chris Naylor comments: "It's always lovely to see children here, but this day was particularly special given all the hard work put into winning the competition prize. The prizes were very well deserved. The children really enjoyed learning about their local heritage, meeting the birds of prey and seeing the new children's menu in print. It was fantastic."

Also as part of the competition, a total of six children from Tarporley CofE, and their guests, will enjoy a complimentary meal in the 2010 Brasserie.

The new Knights and Maidens children's is available to all children, every day, in the 1851 Restaurant and the brand new 2010 Brasserie.

Peckforton Castle unveils enchanting 2010 Brasserie

5 July 2010
The owners of Cheshire landmark Peckforton Castle are reporting a fantastic response to the luxury hotel's new facility, the 2010 Brasserie at Peckforton Castle, after it opened to the public for the first time on 2 July.

Located in the former scullery, the stunning 2010 Brasserie forms part of the recent £1.7 million investment programme to provide a range of new amenities, which also include ten additional en-suite bedrooms and the beauty treatment area, Tranquility at Peckforton Castle.

Open to all members of the public every day from 8am to 10pm, the 2010 Brasserie operates a table waiting service and provides a unique combination of affordable menu choices, striking surroundings and a relaxed atmosphere, making it the ideal venue for all occasions, whether a quick cup of coffee or an informal lunch with friends.

Peckforton Castle managing director Chris Naylor comments: "The 2010 Brasserie will turn even a humble coffee break into an enchanting experience. From take away drinks, a pot of tea with a pastry, a sandwich for lunch or even a celebration for a small group, the 2010 Brasserie offers it all in a magical setting."

The contemporary menu with its generous selection of food and drink – put together by the team behind the venue's award winning 1851 Restaurant – features speciality fair-trade coffees, pastries, sandwiches, panninis, soup, salad, fishcakes, burger and even Rib-Eye steak, with ingredients sourced from Cheshire farms and suppliers where possible. The new children's menu for knights and maidens was created with the help of local schoolchildren and is also available in the 1851 Restaurant.

Chris says: "The 2010 Brasserie menus are, of course, less formal than a la carte and table d'hote, but all food is produced to the same high standards of the 1851 Restaurant and served in the same professional manner." This lovingly restored section of the Grade I listed building retains many of its original features including windows and two cast iron cooking ranges, which date back to the 1840s. These are combined with the modern day comforts of luxury furnishings, free Wi-Fi and a flat screen television, striking a perfect balance between the old and new. The courtyard creates additional space and offers a modern al fresco dining experience.

Chris adds: "We're delighted with the new 2010 Brasserie. It's turned out exactly how we imagined; first class in every way. It only opened a few days ago, but already there's a real buzz about the place. We've received a lot of wonderful feedback. Come and tell us what you think, you'll be most welcome."

To celebrate the launch of the 2010 Brasserie, Peckforton Castle is giving away a number of vouchers valid until 31 October 2010 entitling the holder to a free bottle of house wine when two people dine with a two course meal in either the 2010 Brasserie or the 1851 Restaurant.
