WITHIN THESE WALLS
Our History...
So, the story begins... 1840 - 1876
THE STORY STARTS IN 1840 WHEN JOHN TOLLEMACHE BOUGHT/INHERITED 36,000 ACRES OF LAND WHICH INCLUDED THE VILLAGES OF PECKFORTON AND BEESTON.
JOHN TOLLEMACH'S DREAM WAS TO BUILD ON THE TOP OF THE PECKFORTON HILLS A FORTIFIED HOME IN THE STYLE OF A MEDIEVAL CASTLE AND TO THIS END WORK COMMENCED IN 1842 BUT THE MAGNITUDE OF THE PROJECT MEANT IT WAS NOT COMPLETED UNTIL 1851.
SUCH A MAGNIFICENT PROJECT HAS SINCE BEEN REWARDED BY
English Heritage
GIVING IT THE STATUS OF A GRADE 1 LISTED BUILDING.
1876 - 1939
THE EXPERIENCE OF VISITING THE CASTLE STARTS AS YOU PASS THROUGH THE GATE HOUSE LODGE AND THEN DRIVE UP THROUGH THE FOREST BEFORE ENTERING THE CASTLE WARD VIA AN OPEN CARRIAGE-WAY PROTECTED BY A PORTCULLIS.
JOHN TOLLEMACHE BECAME A LORD IN 1876 IN RECOGNITION OF HIS SERVICES TO AGRICULTURE HE BECAME THE FATHER OF 24 SONS (BY HIS TWO MARRIAGES) AND ONE DAUGHTER. ONLY 12 OF HIS SONS SURVIVED HIM. HE DIED IN 1890 AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 85
THE LAST MEMBER OF THE TOLLEMACHE FAMILY TO LIVE IN THE CASTLE WAS LORD BENTLEY; HE LEFT PECKFORTON AND TOOK UP RESIDENCE IN EASTBOURNE IN 1939.
1939 - present day

DURING WORLD WAR II, PECKFORTON CASTLE WAS USED AS A HOSTEL FOR 200 PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED CHILDREN EVACUATED FROM THE LONDON AREA.
THIS
MAGNIFICENT PROJECT
WAS RECOGNISED AND REWARDED IN 1952 WHEN IT WAS GRANTED GRADE 1 LISTED BUILDING STATUS BY ENGLISH HERITAGE
THE CASTLE REMAINED UNUSED UNTIL 1969.
OVER THE YEARS THE CASTLE HAS BEEN USED BY PRODUCERS AS A LOCATION FOR MAKING MOVIES, FOR TELEVISION AND CINEMA.
NAMELY;
GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT

SHERLOCK HOLMES
DOCTOR WHO
DURING THE 1980S THE NEW TENANTS USED IT FOR A PRIVATE CLUB CALLED 'THE TREASURE TRAP', THE MEMBERS OF WHICH DON MEDIEVAL COSTUMES AND PLAY 'GEORGE AND THE DRAGON' TYPE FANTASY GAMES.
IN 1989 THE CASTLE WAS SOLD AGAIN, BECOMING A VENUE FOR BUSINESS CONFERENCES AND WEDDING RECEPTIONS. BY 2001 ITS HISTORY HAD YET AGAIN BLENDED WITH MODERN TIMES AND WE WERE ONE OF THE GOVERNMENT’S FIRST VENUES TO BE LICENSED FOR CIVIL CEREMONIES HELD BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL REGISTRY OFFICE.
OUR CASTLE HAS CENTURIES OF TRADITION WITHIN ITS WALLS, AND THE AGELESS CHARM YOU ENJOY NOW IS DUE TO THE VISION HELD BY THE NAYLOR FAMILY WHEN THEY TOOK OWNERSHIP BACK IN 2006
A STRONG COMMITMENT TO IT BEING A FAMILY-RUN BUSINESS HAS HELPED SHAPE THE SUCCESS THAT PECKFORTON CASTLE NOW ENJOYS – AND WILL BE THE INFLUENCE FOR GROWTH IN THE FUTURE.
