What is Afternoon Tea?

The Tradition

A quintessentially British institution with roots stretching back to the early 1840s. Afternoon Tea is credited to Anna Maria Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, who began requesting a tray of tea and light refreshments to stave off hunger between luncheon and the fashionably late dinner hour.

Quickly spread among the aristocracy and upper classes of Victorian England, Afternoon Tea evolved into an elaborate social ritual served typically between 3pm and 5pm.
